Creativity is in everything we do – for ourselves, our families, our friends and our communities.
Patti has performed throughout LA Angeles over the years, but behind the spotlight, cabaret legend, Patti Berman, a long time LA resident, lives her life in service to others and if we listen, her story reminds us that happiness and joy are in the giving – not the receiving. That’s why this holiday, Patti decided to record (and produce!!) a brand-new album of holiday classics and share it freely with any one and everyone who wants to feel a little better, a little closer or a little happier this holiday.
Growing up with a mother who sang with Mel Tormé in the 1940’s certainly laid a strong foundation for her path to becoming the force Patti Berman is today, but its her unique ability to listen to her inner voice that should inspire us all this holiday.
Even as a young girl Patti knew that listening to - and honoring - her inner voice made her different. At a time when traditional expectations were foisted upon young women, Patti followed her own path and is leaving only love and hope in her wake.
After earning high marks and experiencing her first thrill of singing in front of an audience during high school, Patti was awarded a full scholarship to UCLA where she earned her degree in Theoretical Mathematics, an achievement she proudly uses to this day for her side gigs in computer software development and as a volunteer math tutor for LA’s growing population of disadvantaged and underserved youth.
Patti never envisioned herself getting married or having children and says found her joy in giving back to her community by helping others.
That being said, Patti loves to say that “When Man plans, G*d laughs!”
Because it was on a typical day during her work with “School on Wheels” in helping the children of Skid Row that Patti met the little girl who would change her life forever. After getting to know, trust and love each other, Patti and her now-daughter agreed that they wanted to become family and the official adoption is history. Patti couldn’t be more proud of her daughter who has grown into a beautiful woman inside and out and just recently married the love of her life.
Patti believes our resilience is always being tested, because even with a full life and loving family, the extreme isolation and long-lasting effects of the Coronavirus Pandemic was a force no one could have predicted.
Even cabaret legends weren’t performing during that time so being at high-risk Patti vigilantly self-quarantined throughout the Pandemic. Once again, Patti’s inner voice knew that being totally alone was harmful so in 2019 - at age 72 - Patti decided to enroll in the Colburn School in order to work with Michael Chipman who has helped her expand her singing range by a full octave – a rare achievement for singers in their 70’s.
It’s this joy of learning, achieving and creating that drove Patti to want to create and share this special holiday album – and Viva LA is honored to be able to help spread her message that the “Joy is in the Giving”.
In between her singing engagements, Patti works passionately, vigilantly and tirelessly to save and revitalize the remaining group of original 1920’s movie palaces and theaters in DTLA most notably The Los Angeles, The Palace, and the State.
Patti truly captures the mission of Viva LA and celebrates and shares her creativity at home and around the world. Thank you, Patti, Viva LA!
